Working in Sweden: What You Need to Know
EU/EEA Citizens
As an EU/EEA citizen, you don't need a work permit to work in Sweden. You can also come to Sweden to look for a job. Your family can join you as long as you have the right of residence. Just make sure to bring a valid passport or national ID card. Family members from outside the EU may need a residence card, which can be applied for after moving to Sweden.
Non-EU Citizens
If you're from a country outside the EU, you generally need a work permit to work in Sweden. To qualify, you'll need:
A valid passport.
An employment contract offering conditions that match Swedish collective agreements.
A salary that meets the minimum requirement (80% of the median salary in Sweden).
Health, life, employment, and pension insurance from your employer.
Certain countries (e.g., Australia, Canada, Japan) allow working holiday visas for up to one year. For shorter employment (under three months), some nationalities may need both a work permit and a visa.
Family Members
If you hold a work permit, your spouse/partner and children can also apply for residence permits to join you in Sweden.
Application Process
Secure a job offer and an employment contract.
Your employer initiates the work permit application and consults with the relevant trade union.
Submit your completed application online, including your employment contract and passport details.
Extending a Work Permit
You can apply to extend your permit before it expires, allowing you to continue working while awaiting a decision.
Nordic Citizens
Citizens of Nordic countries can live and work in Sweden without registering with the Migration Agency, but should register with the Swedish Tax Agency for a personal identity number.
Swiss Citizens
Swiss citizens need a residence permit for stays over three months. You can start working immediately upon entering Sweden with a valid passport.
